Technology in the Workplace - Boon or Curse?

By Roger Clark Like all new innovations, technology in the work environment can either work for you or against you. What is good for the employer or is not always the same for the employee. Is Technology Working FOR You or AGAINST You When cellphones became available it seemed that they would fill a need for instant communication - any time, any place - that would help people be more efficient and thus save time. Then email became a mainstream method of business communication. Marvelous - now telephones wouldn't ring off the hook, messages would not have to be stored and retrieved as verbal communications, which took time. Instead, information would be clear and concise and could be retrieved and answered any time, any where - again the promise of more freedom. With email, internet and cellphones, was it really necessary for workers to be restrained to the office? Maybe shorter work days would ensue. Perhaps parents could collect their children from school and be contacted at home via either of these methods. The work world was changing. This truth came about as more workers were able to take their jobs with them. The travel from home to work and back again was no longer a barrier for actually DOING the work. Telecommunication was making itself an integral part of conducting business. With cellphones and email, distance, time and travel were no longer barriers to conducting business effectively. For some, this meant that coming to the office every day was an option - not a requirement. Mothers and fathers found new freedom to take care of their children while still collecting the paycheck they needed to support them. Work could be done at home, at the park, at the grocery store, at night... Unfortunately, this ability to work anywhere has become a nuisance instead of a luxury for some individuals. The fact that they are ABLE to do business any time, any where, means that they actually ARE doing business all the time. Rather than free them, they found that they cannot get far enough away from work to really put it away for the day. Illness and emergencies do not stop the phone from ringing or the email from piling up - and because you can access it, there is no excuse for not dealing with it. So for some, the convenience has become a ball and chain - creating longer work hours and constant stress. For these individuals it is necessary to commit themselves and their work mates to guidelines such as turning the phone off. Not accessing email regularly. Sticking to these rules and telling other work mates your new practices should help. Remember that you were supposed to be ASSISTED by these devices. It is in the best interest of your health and the well-being of your family if these tools keep their proper place. Corporate World: Jungle Or Paradise?

By Severo Santos The road to the top is not easy, it is bumpy and dirty. Along the way, we meet interesting creatures. There are seasons in life when we will be at crossroads and choose a path based on what is important in our life. Either way may lead us to our goal, but the means to get there is different. While we have control over the choices we make, we don't have control over the consequences. The cost of our actions are governed by natural and spiritual laws that were set in place a long time ago. The corporate world is the playing field where we work to achieve our goals. It is a place where people earn their living and individuals make a name for themselves. It is also the arena where companies compete or collaborate to stay in business. With the changing trends brought by globalization, businesses are shifting its strategy to be efficient and productive. Professionals, therefore, must adapt to these changes and aspire for continuity of employment rather than job security. Likewise, in an organization, individuals compete with each other to get a piece of the available resources. While competition is not necessarily bad, it affects the behavior of people. As Francis J. Kong, renowned speaker and author, said in his speech at Asian Institute of Management during the launching of John Maxwell's lecture in Manila, "the corporate world can either make you a better person or otherwise". A "jungle", that's how a friend described the culture in his organization. "Men, they will eat you alive", he continued. It is a place where only the strongest thrives, a place where you have to constantly watch your back, a place where you're not sure whose on your side and whose not. He also said "you have to learn how to paddle your own canoe; do not expect help and assistance from your peers. If you can not survive on your own, you will never make it." Are you in a similar situation? Is there a proactive way in dealing with the above mentioned culture? Norman Vincent Peale once said "change your thoughts and you change the world" In response to the question, first, we have to understand the existing paradigm and second, explore an alternative paradigm. The Prevailing Paradigm Because everyone wants a piece of the available resources and they perceive management as not being fair, professionals become competitive and have taken aggressive actions to get what they want. Since management controls the purse, getting their attention in any means is the primary objective of all stakeholders. In some organization, rank and file employees get organize to compel management to enter into a collective bargaining agreement. But middle management employees have taken an individual approach, rather than the collective approach of the ranks. This group resorted to individual competition to secure a better place in the organization, or better compensation package. While some will compete according to the rules, others may resort to dirty tricks to get what they want. In this paradigm, the people looked up to management as the only most powerful person or group whose favor or wrath can make or break an employee. The ancient proverb is correct when it says: Many try to win the favor of rulers. And everyone is the friend of a man who give gifts. Prov. 19:6 (NIrV) Because of this, the people in the bottom and middle of the organization will explore all means to get something from management. Sometimes, the time-honored rules are respected, sometimes its not. People use charm, sex, deception and even violence just to attain their goal. The Alternative Paradigm Is there a more powerful group than management who can offset political activity? If we will include the Supreme Being and place him above management, a new paradigm will bring a sense of order and stillness to those who will believe. If employees believe that the Supreme Being is fair-- rewards or reprimands a person according to what he does, his behavior will change. Those in leadership position will be careful in the exercise of his management prerogatives because he is now accountable to a more powerful person who sees not only his actions, but his motives as well. On the other hand, the people beneath, will not take matters to their own hands. The thought that a just and powerful being is in control will enable the people in the middle and bottom of the organization to respect authority. The trust brought by the presence of the Supreme Being will bring balance with the expectation that justice will be served. This paradigm, however, can't be legislated because faith is a personal choice. As an individual believes, his mindset and behavior will also change. Legislation will only establish the do's and dont's but intentions can not change. Just like the old story of a father and daughter which I often heard as illustration from the teachings of Dr. David Sumrall, Undershepherd of Cathedral of Praise in Manila, Philippines: "The father said to his daughter, sit down, the daughter replied, no I will not. The Father got angry and said sit down! No I won't! The daughter shouted back. So the father forced her to sit down and said now you are sitting down. The daughter replied I may be physically sitting down but deep inside my heart I am still standing". This paradigm explores the principles of Spiritual Intelligence, it is not meant to turn the business enterprise to a religious institution but to synchronize business culture and behavior to that of the natural laws. Spiritual Intelligence is "wisdom", if recognized and observed, this will help professionals make better decisions, and in the process, take them to their goal minus the stress brought by unorthodox methods. Furthermore, this paradigm when at work, can influence the culture of an organization. So is the corporate world a jungle or bliss? It's in the paradigm of the beholder. Sonnie E. Santos

God's Healing Power Is Available To You By Faith

By Eunice Coughlin Good health and healing is available to us by faith in Jesus. It is Gods promise to us when we become Christians. "Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by Him and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed.Isaiah 53:4-5 NIV God created us to have eternal life, which includes health, in the beginning but because of what happened when Adam and Eve sinned against God, our bodies and soul were given over to death and decay. The man now has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever. Genesis 3:22 God has to follow the natural law that He has placed on this earth. Just as trees and flowers and even rocks are subject to decay, our bodies are naturally given over to decay until we die and we become ashes. But when we receive new life in Jesus, we are renewed inside and out. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV However, we still live on the earth and our bodies are still subject to the worlds decay. Just as we need to guard our hearts against sin, we need to guard our bodies against that physical decay. Thats why it is so important to eat right and take care of our bodies. Its not wisdom to allow things in our body that are not healthy, just as we wouldnt allow things in our minds that are not healthy. Moderation is the key. Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Thats the same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. If it is powerful enough to raise the dead; it is certainly powerful enough to heal you and keep you healthy. If you havent received Jesus in your heart as your Savior, please consider it. Maybe you have been considering it but you are putting it off. It doesn't matter what you've done or who you are, God forgives a repentant heart. Dont put it off any longer;the blessing and healing of God awaits you once you receive His love into your heart. If you need healing, receive it the same way you received your salvation-by faith! Look up scriptures on healing and declare them over yourself. In most situations, you will not see a miraculous healing that occurs instantaneously. It happens, but rarely. God works according to the natural laws that He set in place. He also created our bodies to heal naturally. Our faith and our actions work together to bring healing to our bodies. Even the medical community has given credit to the power of prayer to heal. Think positively about your health situation in your mind and express it through your words by declaring Gods word of healing over yourself. As you declare God's word of healing over your life, don't turn around and say that you are sick. You are are just stomping all over the seed of your faith and you will not receive your harvest of healing. "But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a doubleminded man, unstable in all he does."James 3:6-8 NIV If you struggle with this idea of healing, seek God about it for yourself. We all have the ability to hear from God for ourselves. Just make sure that what you hear in your heart lines up with the word of God. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. James 3:17 NIV God is always positive, never condemns or discourages. God always rewards those who seek Him and He gives wisdom to those who ask for it, If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. James 1:5-6 NIV. Eunice Coughlin is the founder of http://www.healthy-living-for-moms.com,for moms of all ages and stages who seek spiritual and physical health and wellness. Teenagers

By Diane Overgard Rude teenagers! Poor grades! Talking back! Out of control teens! The teen years may be challenging but teens are also funny, interesting, caring, loving, and committed people! When parents understand behaviors that are part of the normal process of growing up, they dont have to be alarmed, ashamed, hurt, embarrassed, threatened, or shocked. It is NORMAL for teens to: Spend lots of time with friends.
Desire independence and freedom.
Feel invincible.
Have opinions that are different from parents.
Challenge rules because they see exceptions and extenuating circumstances.
Experience intense emotions and mood swings.
Appreciate more privacy. Teens are getting ready to leave home. That is a tough job. During these few years teenagers are learning to become independent, become problem solvers, and become comfortable with themselves. Parents also have a tough job. They are trying to understand teens and to help them become mature adults. It is helpful to remember that teens are in process. They are not who they will be as adults. A lot of learning is still taking place. These years are the training ground for mature adult characteristics. Tension is eased when parents merely understand the changing behaviors of teenagers. When parents realize that both teenager and parent have tough jobs, they can be gentler on themselves and their teens. Diane Overgard, CFLE, has been involved in parent education and staff training, guiding parents and their children in active learning environments. Be Aware Of Your Reasons

By Greg McPhail You have decided that you want to lose weight and improve your health. What is the first step? Start by asking yourself what your reason(s)is for wanting to make this change. This may sound trivial, but if you do not have a conscience and powerful reason for wanting to lose weight, you will find plenty of reasons not to. I'm assuming that, like me, a lot of you have tried and failed at some previous attempt to lose weight in the past. For me, the last time was about 2 1/2 years ago. I had lost about 50 pounds, which I had killed myself to do, and had kept it off for about 6 months. Two later, I gained back the 50 pounds plus another 8 pounds. I had plenty of excuses. My wife and I bought our first house, my second son was born, I took a part-time job in the evening, ect... I kept finding excuses not to work out and my diet soon followed and went down the tubes. After working so hard why did I let this happen? I believe now that it came down to the fact that my reason for wanting to stay lean and healthy had changed. When I first began, I kept looking at pictures of myself at nineteen and I wanted to look like that again. There was nothing I could do about the thinning hair, but I could change my body. But somewhere along the way, looking like I did twelve years ago was no longer important. The point to all of this is that you need to consciously pick a reason and write it down. It will probably be more than one and they should be something that is important to you. Important enough to get you through those rough days ahead when you feel like quiting. Post you reasons somewhere that you will see them everyday. At your desk, ect... I like to place mine on the refrigerator so when I get that craving for some ice cream I have to stop and ask myself if it is worth it. It feels so good when I reach in and grab a bottle of water instead. We all are starting from a different place. We all have reasons why we are where we are. We all have reasons why we don't want to be here anymore. Knowing these reasons and being aware when they change will help you greatly in achieving your goals. The Page Rank 10 Experiment Can It Live Up To Its Name?

By Mike Harader This is an update to the original article about the Page Rank 10 Experiment where the page rank 10 web site tries to achieve a Google page rank of 10 within 2 years. The participating site that refers the most traffic to the page rank 10 site gets to keep the page rank 10 site at the end of the contest if it achieves the page rank level of 10. The Page Rank 10 Experiment is continuing to grow, but is it meeting with any success? Ultimately, it seems only logical that the success of this project can be measured but only in one way, the page rank that it actually achieves. The site started on April 20th, 2006 and as of today, January 20, 2007, it is currently showing 2540 back links in Google. New sites continue to sign up as participants in this experiment on a regular basis. One can only wonder what will be the ultimate outcome of this attempt to achieve an unthinkable and most likely unreasonably objective of a page rank 10! I dont know how many sites currently rank as a PR10. Google owns the only sites I can recall matching this page rank level. As of this writing the site reports 111.799 unique visitors since 4/20/2006. The last time I wrote about this, they were predicting an increase in page rank from PR4 to PR6. I have personally seen that Google has updated its page rank for at least some sites since the last article I wrote about this. The page rank of the page rank 10 web site did not increase during this update. It is still registering a page rank of 4. Owning a web site with a page rank of 10 would open up huge opportunities for the new owner. But, even if it were to occur, how long could it actually achieve this page rank? Probably not very long as the incentive for other sites linking to this site would be gone once there was a new owner. Stay tuned for more updates on this experiment in the future and visit The Pixel Wars to find the link to this page rank 10 experiment site. It is the green banner that says pagegrank10 on it. Scrapbooking Doesn't Have To Be Expensive

By Elaine Lemons I love scrapbooking, making cards and little gifts, but it can be very expensive if you limited your creativity only to items you purchase. We all love die cuts but who says you have to buy them? Why not make your own? It takes time of course, but like scrapbooking its very therapeutic. Plus when youre done you have something else special to add to your scrapbook, die cuts personally made by you! When I sit down at my table to start on a project I have two bowls near by. One is for scraps and the other is for trash. Scraps come in handy for many reasons. One, you dont have to cut a perfectly good sheet of paper for just a small piece. You can use a piece of scrap. I also use my scraps to create my own die cuts. Whether Im creating a journal block or a snowman with pop dots, I eventually end up using all my scraps. Another good source for die cuts are magazines. Believe it or not, you can cut pictures out of a magazine and glue them to a piece of card stock and have very nice accents for your pages. Im pretty resourceful when it comes to finding the perfect items for my scrapbook pages. I have even used old Christmas Cards and pieces of wrapping paper. I save movie tickets, napkins and brochures to put on my pages. Ive even used a paper placemat from a dinner on my page. Ive seen pages that used pieces cut from a cereal box. Titles for your pages dont always have to come from the scrapbook store. You can make your own, too. Cutting letters out of a magazine works really well as does using your home computer to create titles and to do your journaling. Clip art works well on scrapbook pages, too! Ive also made it a habit that when Im taking photographs to think about titles. If were going to a museum I will take a picture of the museum sign and later crop that picture to create my title for the page. Taking photographs of signs is also a good way to remember names. Many times instead of purchasing new paper for my backgrounds Ill use my rubber stamps. I have a small variety of stamps and using white card stock I can create some beautiful pages. Making gift bags is so easy using plain luncheon sacks and my rubber stamps. My family and friends always appreciate a gift bag custom made by me. Ive purchased several rubber stamps throughout the years. Some stamps were all ready mounted while others required me to cut the rubber and mount the stamps myself. In those cases, I did not let the scrap rubber go to waste either. I saved each piece to use as pop dots. I still have several pieces of scrap rubber and eventually I plan on making my own mosaic stamp. I love all those different pattern scissors but I cant afford to buy them all. I found that ripping paper with my fingers works well. At first I was terrified to rip a page but I got the hang up of. Sometimes I use a ruler as a tearing edge. I will hold the ruler on my sheet of paper and rip the paper straight down the side of the ruler. This technique is quite effective. I bought a tag punch a while back and it has proven to be a wonderful investment. I can make my own tags in as many different colors as I want and tags are great for journaling, too. I no longer have to purchase expensive tags. A friend of mine introduced me to drywall tape instead of buying magic mesh. I couldnt believe the difference in cost and drywall tape comes in a variety of colors. Ive also used my inkpads to color white drywall tape to match my color scheme if I didnt have that color on hand at the tape. For organization Ive purposely stayed away from items that are specifically for scrapbooking. Ziploc bags work great and I love the aisle in Walmart that has all those plastic containers. I have a storage bin on wheels that I store all my paper in. It works great and didnt cost much at all. Plastic kool-aid containers and butter tubs come in handy. Something else about shopping and staying away from the scrapbook aisle, you can usually buy things so much cheaper. I buy quite a bit of paper and I usually stick to solid colors. Occasionally I will buy pattern paper if its something that I know I can use. I use a lot of white card stock and its actually cheaper to buy it in the office department than in the scrapbooking department. Check it out! Im telling you the truth. Same thing with craft bags, theyre cheaper in the food section. Instead of subscribing to those very expensive craft magazines I surf the Internet. There are many craft sites that offer free newsletters and many sites are packed full of ideas free of charge! Im always looking for a sale, too. This is the time that I will buy the items that I need whether in the stores or on the Internet. Keeping an eye open for those sales papers and newsletters that trickled in your inbox can save you a lot of money. Scrapbooking doesnt have to be expensive. There are so many ways to save money. The ideas are endless and so is your creativity. Elaine Lemons love to scrapbook on a daily basis and is an author on
