Business and Market Overview on Philippines

By Khal Mastan ECONOMY. Philippines's economy suffered through mismanagement under the country's late president Marcos who ruled the country under martial law from the 1960s to 1980s. To revive the country's economy, former president Fidel Ramos opened the country to foreign investments in the early 1990s. During Ramos' term in office, foreign investments increased from only US$42 million in 1992 to US$2 billion by 1997. The Philippines weathered the Asian economic crisis of 1997 in much better shape than many other Southeast Asian countries due to the large number of Filipino overseas workers regularly remitting money into the country and low external debt. Philippines GDP was US$85.1 billion with a GDP per capita of US$1,042 in 2004. The economy of the Philippines grew at annual GDP growth averaging 4.6% from 2000 to 2004 contributed mainly by growth in the service sector, agriculture and exports of electronics. Inflation declined from 6.5% in 2000 to 2.5% in 2002 but trended upwards to reach 8.6% by 2004. Unemployment remains relatively high compared to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore ranging between 9.8% and 10.9% from 2000 to 2004. The service sector contributes to half or 52.8% of the Philippines GDP in 2004 while manufacturing contributed 31.8% and agriculture 15.3%. Major industries include electronics, garments, footwear, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, wood products, processed foods, petroleum refining and fishing. Major agriculture products include sugarcane, coconuts, rice, corn, bananas, cassavas, pineapples, mangoes and seafood. DEMOGRAPHY. The Philippines comprises of nearly 7,100 islands but eleven islands account for 90% of the country's total population. Main islands are Luzon and Mindanao accounting for 65% of the population. Other major but less populated islands include Negros, Samar, Panay and Palawan. Filipino society and culture is nearly homogeneous and 90% of the population are of the Malay descent. Other ethnic groups include the various indigenous tribes and Chinese immigrants. Spanish-Mexican culture brought by the former Spanish colonial rulers who ruled the country from Mexico has an influence of Filipino culture. The country is predominantly Catholic accounting for 81% of the population followed by various Christian denominations (11%) and Islam (5%). Tagalog is the national language and widely spoken across the islands while English is predominantly used in government and business. The proportion of the Filipino population living in the urban areas increased from 49% in 1990 to 62% by 2004. Philippines' main city is Metro Manila (comprising of the city of Manila and 16 surrounding cities and municipalities) has a population of 10 million. Other major cities include Zamboanga, Baguio, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cebu City, Davao and Cagayan de Oro. The Philippines suffers from a high level of income inequality and an estimated 30% of the population live below the poverty level. Another 50% of the population belong to the low-income group while the remaining 20% belonging to the middle and high-income group. The average income of those living in Metro Manila is twice than the national average. INFRASTRUCTURE. Telecommunication services within and between the islands is adequate while international services is relatively good. Internet broadband coverage is mainly concentrated in the major cities and towns of the islands. The islands are adequately served by roads and road transport. Travels between the islands are by air or coastal boats. All the major islands are served by international and domestic airports and sea ports. INTERNATIONAL TRADE. Philippiness exports increased nearly 4-folds from 1995 to 2004. Major trading partners include Japan, US, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and South Korea. Main exports from the Philippines include electronics, garments, optical instruments, coconut products, fresh produce, copper products and chemicals. Main imports include machineries, equipments, fuel, vehicles, transport equipments, plastics chemicals and food grains. CONSUMER USAGE OF TECHNOLOGY. The total number of fixed-line telephones installed in the Philippines was 3.4 million or a penetration of 8 fixed-line phones per 100 population in 2004. However, the penetration for mobile phones is much higher at 39 mobile phones per 100 population. The penetration of computers in the country is low estimated at 2% of the population while the estimated number of internet subscribers is 1.2 million and internet users is 8.0 million. The average penetration of televisions among households in the Philippines is 71% but higher in the Metro Manila at 96%. RETAIL MARKET. There are nearly 360,000 retail establishments and the traditional "mom and pop" stores account for 98% of the establishments. The remaining 2% are the store brands comprising of hypermarkets, supermarkets, department stores, convenience stores and speciality stores. Shopping in these establishments is popular among middle and high-income consumers. These modern outlets are mostly concentrated in Metro Manila accounting for 30% of the Philippines' total retail sales. However, many store brands are expanding their businesses outside Metro Manila into other major urban areas in Luzon and Mindanao. Between 2004 and 2007 and estimated three shopping malls will be built in the Philippines annually. FOOD CULTURE. Like most countries in Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia, rice is the staple food in the Philippines. Filipino cooking is a blend of sweet, sour and spicy tastes. Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and Spanish cooking have an influence on Filipino food culture. Traders and immigrants introduced Indian, Chinese and Japanese cooking while the Spanish colonial rulers introduced Mexican and Spanish cooking. To Know and Not Do, is Not to Know!

By Scott Rauber To guarantee success in business there are no secrets really. The twist in becoming successful in any venture depends on a small handful of repeatedly applied simple techniques. Yes, simple. And yes, done over, and over, and over. There are four that I would like to think I live by, and have helped this non-college educated, almost high school dropout, average guy make a respectful income. And believe me, these techniques can be learned and applied by anyone. Here are the four keys I dont care who your that work every time. 1). Pretend youre a marketing rep for a company. When people start a new business for some reason they have a tendency to start thinking like a boss and not like an employee anymore WRONG. Its awesome to be an entrepreneur in the good ol USA, but you need to market, market, market your business like your are about to get fired, and your whole income will go down the drain in a split second if you dont. And just as we think weve done enough marketing to sustain three businesses, we get upset because of lack of results, and then wequit. Right at this point is when all of your blood-sweat-and-tears-hard-work was just about to pay off. Theres always a point when marketing pays off. Pretend youre a marketing rep for a company and have the attitude of an employee. 2). The harder your work the luckier you get. Very similar point to the first, but hard work involves more than just marketing. It involves knowing your business, competition, resources, options, etc. like the back of your hand. I remember asking my uncle who had reached financial success most of us only dream of, what was the key to his success. I was seriously expecting something I hadnt read in any book, or heard on a tape before, when he blurted out hard work. I felt as though he had given me a canned answer. However as I talked more with him, the truth unfolded. He was the first to arrive and work, and usually worked late into the evening. He worked on the weekends and on some holidays. Im not saying you should abandon your lifestyle completely, but havent you already heard this exact story from someone else that is financially successful. Hard work its no secret. 3). People do business with people they know, like and trust.
I believe firmly in this little tidbit. Why? Because when you set out to market your new business, whether it is a traditional off line or an online business, these are the people that will kick-start your sales. Contacting people that know, like and trust you already will also make your transition to success easier because these are the people that will; return tour emails, answer your phone calls (they see its you on their caller id), reply to your direct mail offerings, and call you back if you have to leave a message on their phone. All because they already know, like and trust you. 4). Its not what you know; its who you know. Again, this is a similar point to #3, but I find that, even though most people know and have heard this simple quote of wisdom before, it is under applied by almost everybody when they begin their initial prospecting. Did you know that most of us know well over 500 people? Its true. Over a lifetime it is astounding how many people we know and can recall, if we will only think about it. In addition weve all heard the success stories from another entrepreneur, who just happened to know the right person, at the right company, that blasted their business into high gear. The truth is we all know the right person. And even though that exact person may not launch us into financial success, they may direct you to their best friend who is the right person!!! These four success points are no secrets, and Im sure you knew about them beforehand, but it boils down to something very different than just knowing. Volunteerism for Teenagers: A Great Character Builder

By Aldene Fredenburg Volunteerism among high school and college students is at an all-time high; many school systems actually build volunteer work into their curriculum. Young people are building homes for Habitat for Humanity, working in National Parks for the Conservation Corps, and involving themselves in political, environmental, and social causes. It's certainly admirable for young people to take an active part in these causes; but it may be even more important than routinely recognized. Unfortunately, the United States is a materialistic society. Teenagers - many of them the same teenagers lining up to volunteer their time - have access to more discretionary funds than any previous generation, and they're spending it. CDs, DVDs, iPods, cell phones (and the accompanying bills), designer clothes, shoes, and bags - all of these material goods are in easy reach of many of our teenagers. Beyond the danger that these kids will grow up with unrealistic expectations when it comes time for them to move out, get a job, and support themselves, there's a real question as to whether these young folks, used to having anything and everything they want, will be able to relate to those less fortunate than they are. This is not a frivolous issue. The high school and college students of today are the voting citizens of tomorrow; some of them will become the leaders of tomorrow, charged with making decisions about people from all walks of life, from the most privileged among us to the desperately poor. How are these often privileged middle class kids to develop empathy for those less fortunate than they are, if they never interact with them? Volunteerism is a way for kids to cut across social and financial boundaries and connect with people different from them. Upper middle class kids from the suburbs of Malibu can work side by side with poor kids from rural West Virginia and urban Brooklyn, clearing trails in a national forest and in the process experiencing an environment beyond the screaming product ads on TV and in magazines billboards. Young people who sign on with Habitat for Humanity can develop an understanding of the difficulties involved for a low-income family when faced with finding decent affordable housing. Locally, kids who volunteer as companions in nursing homes can get a sense of the loneliness and isolation many elderly people experience when cut off from family and friends. Teenagers who involve themselves in volunteer work can develop valuable skills and a sense of responsibility that will stand them in good stead when it comes time for them to enter the work world. But perhaps more important than job-related skills is the opportunity for these young people to develop empathy and a sense of compassion for those who have been wounded by life. Perhaps for these future leaders and citizens, developing compassion is the paramount and most essential benefit of the volunteer experience. What Type of Marketing Organization Are You?

By Rod Whitson I recently ran across an excellent article in strategy+business (an online and hard copy magazine devoted to strategy issues) that shed some interesting light on a very important marketing issue. The article, entitled "Six Types of Marketing Organizations: Where Do You Fit In", is based on a study by Booz Allen Hamilton and the ANA (Association of National Advertisers) that identified six basic types of marketing organizations within companies. I found it to be a fascinating and insightful look at the importance of making sure the marketing function aligns with what the business really needs. According to the article, the six types of marketing organizations (i.e. the marketing people, systems and processes inside a business and the activities they perform) are as follows: 1. Growth Champion. Marketing drives strategy at the senior level and plays a major role in generating revenue and leading new product and business development. 2. Senior Counselor. Although still functioning at the strategic level, marketing serves as more of an advisor to the CEO than a formulator of company-wide strategy. 3. Brand Foreman. Functioning in a more of tactical role, marketing focuses on providing various services to support the companys brands. This can include developing communications strategies and creative initiatives, as well as campaign execution. 4. Growth Facilitator. Similar to the growth champion, except here marketing mainly supports other major functions rather than initiating and leading strategy on its own. 5. Best Practices Advisor. Marketing serves as more of a tactical weapon whose primary purpose is to help each business unit achieve maximum effectiveness in their marketing efforts. 6. Service Provider. Marketing acts much like an outside vendor, providing advertising, promotions, public relations and other marketing services to the companys business units and product teams as needed. The danger, warns the article, is that most marketing organizations believe they cover all these functions, when in fact they actually perform only one. As a result, there is often a major disconnect between what the business needs from the marketing function and what it actually gets. The key to resolving this dilemma lies in answering three critical questions: 1. What type of marketing organization currently exists in your company? 2. What type of marketing organization needs to exist in your company (based on your strategic goals, value proposition and the future direction of your business)? 3. How do you properly align the marketing team so that #1 and #2 are the same? A Simple Test What I really liked about the article was that it included a link to the Booz Allen/ANA Marketing Profiler, a short questionnaire that identifies your marketing organizations current profile and offers recommendations for your moving your marketing organization closer to where it needs to be. In addition, the profiler offers resources and readings (based upon your profile) to help formulate the proper strategy for this migration path. I took the profiler for Townsend, Inc., and found it to be quite accurate (we came out as "Growth Champions) in its assessment of our current marketing function. More important, the recommendations offered to improve our marketing organization were dead on. They helped focus my thinking in several important areas and reinforced a couple of initiatives we have recently begun. For example: * Recommendation: Develop metrics and decision tools (such as marketing ROI) to measure the performance of individual products, channels and segments. * Lesson learned: At Townsend, we need to do a better job of measuring our marketing ROI. We have already started down that road by shifting primarily to direct marketing and Internet marketing, which should make it easier for us to track and measure results. * Recommendation: Dont keep all decision-making authority at the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) level. Instead, allocate these decision rights to appropriate levels of the organization to ensure accurate, rapid and continuous responses to service requests * Lesson learned: This was a good reminder that we need to get our internal teams more involved in the marketing process so they can help select where we prospect and ensure that we generate the right kinds of clients for Townsend. * Recommendation: Make sure your capabilities are properly aligned with both the marketing agenda and the CEOs priorities. Understand exactly what skills are required in individual areas. * Lesson learned: If were going to market through the Internet, we need to build internal Web-based marketing skills as quickly as possible. * Recommendation: Involve other organizational areas (operations, product development, finance, sales) early in the process of making marketing investments * Lesson learned: Again, a good reminder to get our internal teams more involved in how we market as an organization. The Rise of Samsung It might be easy to dismiss this kind of assessment as an interesting but not especially valuable exercise. Before doing so, however, consider what assessing their marketing organization did for Samsung. According to the strategy+business article, Eric Kim took over as vice president of global marketing for Samsung in 1999, just as the company embarked on a new strategy to go from a low-cost producer of electronics, sold primarily under the brand names of its OEM customers, to a manufacturer of high-end digital products. This represented a huge and very difficult shift for the company, one that could lead to failure on a massive scale if all the proper elements were not in place. Upon analyzing the skills, structure and core competencies of his marketing organization, Kim quickly realized they did not align with the new direction. He then spent five years reworking Samsungs entire marketing organization so that it more closely matched the firms newly identified needs. The result? Last year, Samsung became the worlds 21st most valuable brand (according to the Business Week/Interbrand 2004 rankings), only one spot behind the vaunted Japanese electronics giant, Sony. While many factors contributed to this meteoric rise, developing the right kind of marketing organization clearly played a major role in elevating Samsung to its current position as one of the worlds elite brands. The Secrets of Hop Bets

A hop bet is a little understood one roll, verbal bet you can make on any combination of numbers. For example, if you have an intuitive notion that the combination 4&1 will appear on the very next roll of the dice, you can place a bet for 4&1 hopping. If the 4&1 do appear, you win. If 3&2, or any other combinations come up, you lose. The payoff for a hop bet is usually 15:1. This means you can bet 2&3 hopping, or 4&2 hopping, or even 3&4 hopping. If you bet $5 on any of these bets and the very next roll is for exactly the numbers you bet, then youll win $75. Wanna know the secrets that craps pros use to win with hop bets? Lets find out! Most people dont know this, but you can bet on hardways hopping and get a higher payoff. If you think a hardway four is due you can bet, for example, $5 2&2 hop. Now the good thing about hard way hops is that they pay double - instead of 15:1 (on a regular hop bet) you get 30:1 on your wagers! So, if you bet $5 hardway 4 hop, and the very next roll is 2 & 2, youll win $150 (at 30:1) instead of $35 at 7:1 - $110 more! This is rarely done, but it can be very profitable - if you do it correctly! The seven can be made three ways - 3 & 4, 2 &5, and 1 & 6, so your bets must be in multiples of $3. You can use a simple $3 progression ($3, $6, $9, etc.), especially if the shooter sets the dice and bets big on the passline. Finally, if you like to lay bets, you probably thought of hedging your even lay bets (4, 6, 8 or 10) with a hardway wager. If the hard ten rolls, you lose your $80 lay bet but win $84 (at 7:1) from the hard way. Now, instead of betting $12 hard ten you can bet $3 hard ten hopping, which can pay 30:1 instead of 7:1. Remember though, that this is a one roll bet so it must be replaced on every roll. However, if you lose the $80 when the hard way rolls you can win $90 ($3 at 30:1) on the hard ten. It encompasses two types of disease processes namely chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Quite often, people who suffer from COPD show a combination of features of both disease processes. It is one of the commonest conditions that require hospital admission during period of flare-ups. According to one epidemiology study in the US, approximately eight million people have chronic bronchitis whereas 2 million people have emphysema. As we can see, chronic bronchitis is more common than emphysema. What are the causes of COPD? Smoking. Smoking is the number 1 cause of COPD. More than 90 percent of COPDs are caused by smoking, cigarette or otherwise. About 30 percent of long term smokers will eventually show symptoms of COPD of varying degrees. Other causes include air pollution and inherited enzyme deficiency namely alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. How does smoking cause COPD? Smoking inadvertently damages the lining of the airways. As with any other part of the body in response to injury, inflammation occurs. Inflammation stimulates the damaged lining to secrete mucus in an abnormal amount and also causes the airway to constrict (narrow). What are the symptoms of COPD? The two main symptoms are cough and breathlessness. COPD sufferers commonly complain about breathlessness and cough that develop gradually over a long period of time. The cough that COPD sufferer gets are usually productive which means they commonly cough up phlegm. The cough usually comes and goes initially but tends to become persistent as time passes. Breathlessness is usually intermittent and only occurs with exertion in the beginning, however if you continue to smoke, the breathlessness persists even when you are at rest, this can be quite distressing! Other symptoms are chronic sputum production, where you constantly cough up phlegm all day and recurrent chest infection. People with COPD are more prone to chest infection for obvious reasons, as the lining in the lung looses its normal defense mechanism against intruding bugs. COPD sounds like asthma, are they any different? Yes. Both COPD and asthma cause similar symptoms, however, they are different in certain ways. COPD causes permanent damage to the airways. The obstruction is 'fixed', hence it is irreversible in general terms. However, airway narrowing in asthma is intermittent and reverses quite easily with medication. Having said that, both COPD and asthma is common, people who suffer COPD can have an asthmatic component and vice versa. What tests are needed to diagnose COPD? A test called spirometry is often performed to diagnose COPD. Bronchodilators (drugs that cause the airway to dilate) are usually added to confirm the diagnosis. If the test result does not show improvement with bronchodilators, then COPD is very likely. What are the treatments of COPD? First of all. Stop smoking. This cannot be stressed enough. Smoking cessation is the first thing you have to do if you want to get better. As the underlying mechanism of COPD is irreversible, medications are used with an aim to slow down it's progress. Drugs that are commonly used to treat COPD include short-acting bronchodilator inhalers (i.e. salbutamol), long-acting bronchodilator inhalers (i.e. tiotropium), steroid inhalers and tablets are all available drugs for treatment of COPD. This article, the last of three, is devoted to recovery from pornography addiction. If we think porn is harmless or that we don't have an addiction, these steps will seem pointless. But, if you know you have an addiction problem and are willing to work, this article will set you on a clear recovery path. We use the Addiction BAR Cycle explained in the previous article, "Pornography-An Addiction?" to understand why these steps work. In the BAR Cycle, Belief generates Action that brings Results which affect Belief, starting the cycle over again. If we want to change an addictive Cycle, we obviously can't change the Results without changing the Action. But, we can't just change our Action either. The late Dr. Alfred Adler said, "We can't consistently act in a way that is inconsistent with our belief." Any of us who has tried to just quit an addiction knows the good Dr. is right. The only way to consistently change our Action is to attack the Belief step of the Addiction BAR Cycle. Accountability And Pornography: Accountability changes what we believe about pornography. We first find someone who will be a trusted, encouraging friend who is willing to help us quit. We tell all of our secrets to them. We commit to them we will not do this any more and to tell them if we slip up. This adds a Belief that viewing porn will result in the unpleasant emotion of having to tell your trusted friend that you broke your commitment. If you do slip up and tell your friend, it builds your Belief in yourself because you 'fessed up. Another good place to be accountable is an addition recovery forum or 12-step group. Abstinence: Sexual abstinence is sometimes necessary if pornographic images come to mind during normal relations. The point, here is to starve your pornographic imagination of the drugs you've become addicted to. Physical Therapy: To change your Belief you can redirect your mind to healthier ways for your body to produce the endorphins and adrenalin you've become addicted to. Strenuous exercise, aerobic exercise and competitive sports all provide a much healthier source of these chemicals. Mental exercises, from learning (anything) to solving puzzles or word games. You're right! Those people are addicted to crossword puzzles. Playing a musical instrument or singing can do the trick, too. By replacing pornography with positive, productive activity of any kind, you're supplying yourself with the physical drugs and building Belief in yourself to eliminate that void that started the addiction in the first place. Esteem Building: In addition to the above, you can change that self Belief and fill that void by taking positive, unselfish actions. Why do you think my life is committed to helping others?
